Did Roman Gladiators ever fight rhinos as in the Gladiator 2 trailer? The rhinoceros was relatively well-known to Romans, and it can be estimated from the literature that about a dozen were exhibited between 55 BCE and 248 CE. Most of them were two-horned African rhinos but there are also depictions of single-horned Asian rhinos in Roman artwork. Here are some of the rhinos mentioned in the literature: 55 BCE - A rhino is displayed by Pompey the Great for his games (Pliny the Elder) 29 BCE - A rhino is brought by Augustus for the games to celebrate the opening of his temple to Julius Caesar. 26 BCE - Another was seen at the Saepta Julia 8 CE - A rhino fought an elephant at the games 80 CE - A rhino is brought at the Colosseum by Emperor Titus. The animal refused to fight other animals but after some prodding it tossed a bear in the air.

149 CE - Some rhinoceroses are exhibited but not killed 192 CE - Emperor Commodus slain possibly several rhinos in the Colosseum (Dio Cassius) For example, all alone with his own hands, he dispatched five hippopotami together with two elephants on two successive days; and he also killed rhinoceroses and a camelopard. Ca 220 CE - Emperor Elagabalus exhibited a rhino. He kept at Rome tiny Egyptian snakes, called by the natives "good genii, " besides hippopotami, a crocodile, and a rhinoceros, and, in fact, everything Egyptian which was of such a kind that it could be supplied. Book: The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino, by Jerry Toner (2015), is a short and interesting analysis on the Roman institution of these bloody spectacles, with Commodus slaying a rhino as a starting point. The Roman emperor Commodus wanted to kill a rhinoceros with a bow and arrow, and he wanted to do it in the Colosseum.

Commodus's passion for hunting animals was so fervent that he dreamt of shooting a tiger, an elephant, and a hippopotamus; his prowess was such that people claimed he never missed when hurling his javelin or firing arrows from his bow. For fourteen days near the end of AD 192, the emperor mounted one of the most lavish and spectacular gladiatorial games Rome had ever seen. Commodus himself was the star attraction, and people rushed from all over Italy to witness the spectacle.

But this slaughter was simply the warm-up act to the main event: the emperor was also planning to fight as a gladiator. The company, founded 80 years ago by Friedrich Schleich, Germany, is one of the largest toy manufacturers in Germany and a leading international provider of figurines.

Schleich today achieves more than half of its sales outside its core market of Germany. The design of the Schleich, manufacture of the production tools and the quality and safety tests are all performed in Germany. What are Schleich products made of? To put it simply Schleich are manufactured from a high quality, non-toxic PVC that passes the quality standards for the Australian/NZ toy industry as well as that of USA and Europe. Each individual piece is hand-painted.

The only exceptions are large-scale patterns, such as the brown spots on a giraffe figure, which are applied in a pad-printing process. Second only to the War Elephant in size & dramatic POP!!! This is my final acquisition completing the Schleich product run World History New Heroes'. Like all other Schleich products the detail & realism is stunning! I wish I would have discovered Schleich products years ago! I have been playing catch up, so to speak! It is hard to call Schleich figurines toys as very few toys gain in value outside of their box, but any retired Schleich figurine quickly gains in value once retired if kept in great condition! PLEASE NOTE The film magazines within the background of the second image are not included within this sale, should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me, many thanks. Please study images for condition, apart from a few scuffs to rear of outer box, their is tiny tear to inner box that I have highlighted in the last image.
